Afrobeats Dance Tutorial for Beginners

In this tutorial, we highlight five Afrobeats dance moves you’ve probably seen online, in songs, or on the streets. 

Network, a Ghanaian move. 

  1. To start, slightly bend your knees. Step out with your right leg and repeat the same motion with your left leg. You can do this as many times as you want. 
  2. With your upper body, drop your corresponding shoulder while simultaneously moving your corresponding hand subtly up and down as you step out with each leg.
  3. Subtly move your shoulders in an upward-downward motion to add an interesting twist to the overall dance. You can slightly lean on one side to spice up the move.
  4. As you do the overall move, start from the knee-bending position as you move your body up and keep repeating the motion.

Gbeku, a Nigerian Move

  1. Start with a backwards hop or slight jump and land on either your toes or flat-footed. At the same time, stretch either of your hands out such that one will be out and the other on your hip.
  2. Maintaining that position, step forward with both feet in a rhythmic way and after three to four movements (it can be fewer or more), hop or jump back.
  3. Also, as you move forward, move the opposite leg with the opposite arm. Every time, one hand should be stretched out and the other on the hip.
  4. To make it livelier, shake your hips moderately faster.
  5. After completing one cycle of the dance, jump back and stretch out both hands.

Azonto, a Ghanaian Move

  1. Start in a bent knee position and move your right leg outwards, and follow with your left leg inward. Repeat the motion in the opposite direction.
  2. When doing this motion, add a little bounce. Slightly go up and down with your knees and chest.
  3. Also, as you are stepping in and out, your opposite hand follows through in a semi-circle type of motion, in front of your body.

Guda, a Ghanaian Move

  1. On slightly bended knees, stretch out your right arm (if you’re left-handed, do the same with the left hand). 
  2. With the other hand, slightly tap your stretched arm, your shoulder, chest and then slightly kick your elbow out (as if nudging someone).
  3. Add a little bounce to the movement as you move your legs in and out.

Gbese, a Nigerian Move

  1. Go in a bended knee position. As you are rising up, lift your left leg in a marching position and then interchange with the right, which you’ll stretch out in a kick.
  2. You can add vibrancy by repeating the same motion twice. The leg you kicked out will be the one you lift, and the other will be stretched out in a kick.
  3. To finish off the move, jump with the legs, turn around and kick one leg out.
